Soil Remediation

Soil Remediation Spring and Fall Package

Step 1 – Early Spring: March, April, May

a)     Starts with a site assessment, photo documentation, soil sample collection for assessment. Based on the soil structure, organic matter and amendment applications may be recommended.

b)     Based on the soil assessment result, a drench of bacteria and fungi will be applied. If cover crop seeding is recommended, they will be applied at this time. Step 1 is the beginning of building the necessary soil structure needed for healthy plant growth.

Step 2 – Spring: May June

a)     Again, we start with a soil sample collection to determine bacterial and fungal counts. If necessary additional amendments will be recommended.

b)     Following the assessment, a second drench will be applied. It will include microorganisms from all four functional groups. It’s at this time that nutrient cycling will begin at levels necessary for strong plant grow. With time the colonies will expand and the plant growth will increase along side.

Step 3 – Spring: May, June

a)     A late spring soil sample is collected and based on the results a specific inoculation of microorganisms from the four functional groups will be applied in the form of a soil drench. Following this application additional layers of organic matter will be recommended as protection from summer heat and to increase soil sponge functioning.

Step 4 – Fall: Late September, October, Early November

b)     A fall inoculation of all four functional microorganism groups will be applied followed by mulch and cover crop recommendations. If we protect and provide for our microbes against the coming winter season, the colonies we established will be available at the first signs of spring. A soil assessment is optional.

*Note: if there have been no disturbances, drift of chemicals or addition of inorganic fertilizers your soils should maintain the microbial colonies established the year before. All the gardener needs to do is continue to add organic matter and ‘whole-food’ amendments, from the previous years recommendations.  One soil assessment per year to monitor your soil or to root out potential functioning issues should be all that is needed. Next steps in gardening care would include the Art of Composting as your primary amendment. If the soils are very damaged or highly compacted it can take 2-3 years to restore soil health.
